Sikh American Student in Georgia Cleared to Work with Beard Intact

A college student in Georgia recently began his internship at a bank despite being initially informed that he may have to forfeit the position because he did not conform to the employer’s dress code. The bank’s rules included a no facial hair policy. The student, whose identity is being withheld, worked with SMART’s Office of Legal Affairs to explain his religiously-mandated turban and beard to his employer. Thanking SMART for its support, the student stated, “I could not have responded to my employer’s demands without all of your help.” If you, or anyone you know, are facing similar workplace accommodation discrimination issues, please contact SMART immediately at legal@sikhmediwatch.org.
