SALDEF Trains Police Officers in Mercer County, New Jersey

SALDEF is pleased to announce that it has trained forty-two new officers in Mercer County, New Jersey through our Law Enforcement Partnership Program (LEPP). The Sikh Awareness training was well received by the Mercer County Police Department, as part of our outreach to law enforcement nationwide. The event taught police officers about the local Sikh Community and assisted them with ways to collaborate and protect the Mercer County Sangat.

Every year, Mercer County Police works with SALDEF to train new recruits on the culture and religion of Sikhs Americans. SALDEF Board Member Amman Singh Seehra delivered a powerpoint presentation about Sikhism and shared his experience on being Sikh American. A memorable moment from the event was when Seehra tied a turban on one of the officers. The officers were able to get a better understanding of the significance of the turban and see firsthand how one is tied.

About the Program

The LEPP training is critical in building understanding and relationships between the Sangat and their local law enforcement. Over the years we have seen examples of how these relationships not only build respect and understanding but also provide opportunity and growth within the community.
