SALDEF Provides Input on Future Airport Technologies
SALDEF was invited to participate in the Community Perceptions of Technology Panel held on November 8th, 2011. The panel was designed to help inform the U.S. Department of Homeland Security about concerns and community perceptions related to the use of new airport screening technology. During this panel, SALDEF voiced possible concerns around invasive screening that the Sikh American Community may have with proposed technologies.

SALDEF Meets with United States Commission on Civil Rights Leadership
On November 17, 2011, SALDEF attended a meeting with the Chair, Marty Castro, and Vice-Chair, Abigail Thernstrom, of the Unites States Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR). USCCR is an independent, bipartisan, fact-finding federal agency, whose mission is to inform the development of national civil rights policy and enhance enforcement of federal civil rights laws. During the meeting, which was attended by many other prominent national civil rights and human rights organizations, SALDEF raised the importance to the Commission of being aware of the challenges that Sikhs are facing in schools and workplaces across the country.

SALDEF Advocates for Stronger Anti-Bullying Legislation
On November 21, 2011, SALDEF’s Legal and Legislative Affairs Associate, Amrita Singh, along with members of the National Safe School Partnership visited almost 50 congressional offices in an effort to gain support for the Safe Schools Improvement Act.  The Safe Schools Improvement Act will strengthen measures to prevent the bullying and harassment of students in public elementary and secondary schools. Your support is needed to pass this bill!

SALDEF Participates in Panel on Islamaphobia
On November 8th, SALDEF”s Western Regional Director, Bhupinder Kaur participated on a panel discussing Islamaphobia at Occidental College in southern California. Joining Ms. Kaur on the panel was Salam Al-Marayati, President of the Muslim Public Affairs Council in Los Angeles, CA, and Malek Moazzam-Doulat, Professor of Religious Studies at Occidental College, who served as the Moderator for the event. Students, faculty, and community members were present during the three hour session exploring the affects of 9/11 and anti-Islamic sentiments on the Muslim and Sikh American communities.  Over 100 attendees were present, and were able to hear directly from community organizations discussing violence against communtiy members, relationships with law enforcement agencies, experiences with lawmakers, and much more.

2012 Pocket Calendars Now Available!
Educate your neighbors, friends, and co-workers about Sikh Americans in an easy, informative way through our annual pocket calendars. In their ninth year of production, the 2012 calendars feature full-color images of Sikh Americans, along with examples of core Sikh values and facts about Sikhs in the United States. In a new folded style, the cards are the size of standard business cards.  Put them in your place of work and distribute at community events – place your order today.

George Washington and Princeton Universities Celebrate Gurpurab
Princeton University’s Sikhs of Princeton, and George Washington University’s Sikh Student Association organized events this month honoring the Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Students all over the Princeton University campus could be seen wearing brightly colored turbans during Sikh Awareness Day, held on November 11, 2011.  Members of Sikhs of Princeton, including SikhLEAD Leadership Development Program participant, Kanwal Matharu, tied almost 200 turbans on students and community members while simultaneously informing them about Sikhism.

On November 28th, 2011, George Washington University’s Sikh Student Association held their annual Guru Nanak Dev Ji Langar. SALDEF was invited to speak at the event which was followed by a langar for all who attended.

APIASF Scholarship Application is Now Available
The 2012-2013 APIASF Scholarship Application is now available online. The deadline for all submissions is Friday, January 13, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

The APIASF scholarship program provides the critical support that many AAPI students need to pursue higher education. Scholarship recipients also gain access to APIASF’s programs and services like leadership training, professional development opportunities and advising.

The President and Mrs. Obama strongly encourage emerging leaders to apply to the nation”s most prestigious program for leadership and public service.
