Remembering a Civil Rights Leader

Today the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, SALDEF, remembers the legacy of civil rights leader Julian Bond—who passed away Saturday, at 75, after a brief illness—and offer our deepest condolences.   Bond worked tirelessly to create a fair and fostering America.  In 2007, SALDEF awarded Bond, the Dorothy Height Coalition Building Award, recognizing his leadership to achieve equality for all.   He served as the former chairman of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People, NAACP, and the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, SPLC.  Bond was also instrumental in founding the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, SNCC, which organized protests and sit-ins during the Civil Rights Movement.   “Julian Bond was a true champion of equality for all people. While we are saddened by this tremendous loss, his career and legacy provides us inspiration to continue to advocate for justice for all,” said Jasjit Singh, SALDEF Executive Director.
