Another Shooting at a Place of Worship

This past weekend in a quiet suburb north of San Diego, another shooting occurred this time at the Poway Synagogue. One woman was killed and three others were wounded in the horrific act of hate and violence. Witnesses reported that the man that entered the synagogue with an AR-15 looking gun was shouting racist slurs before he began shooting. He only stopped shooting after the gun malfunctioned at which time he ran away. It is reported that he surrendered to the police later that same day. It is also reported that he started a fire in a Mosque earlier in the year.

“SALDEF is shocked and saddened to hear of another shooting at a religious institute. It was only a week ago that those celebrating Easter in Sri Lanka were attacked, and before that, there was the shooting at the Christ Church Mosque in New Zealand. Six months ago there was the deadly shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburgh,”  said SALDEF Executive Director Kiran Kaur Gill. “The Sikh community knows all too well about this kind of violence and we stand in support of all those affected. It is time to end this violence.”

SALDEF, in response to the increase of violence in places of worship, will be setting up active shooter trainings across the country. If you would like to host one of these events at your Gurdwara, please contact us by filling out this form CLICK HERE or call (202) 393-2700 for more information.
