Vincent Chin 30: Standing Up Then and Now Watch Party Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM On Saturday, June 23, 2012, there will be a nationwide Google Hangout* with leading civil rights leaders from around the country featuring Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32), CAIR-SF Executive Director Zahra Billoo, OCA Executive Director Tom Hayashi, Asian American Justice Center Executive Director Mee Moua and more with Guest Moderator Phil Yu of Angry Asian Man. Click here to find a viewing party near you! In 1982, Vincent Chin was the victim of a hate crime murder in Detroit. Thirty years later, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue to face discrimination and bullying. In light of recent tragedies like the extreme hazing and subsequent death of Pvt. Danny Chen and the continuing effects of 9/11, what can Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders do to stand up against racism and discrimination? In the San Francisco area? Join SALDEF for an event that the Bay Area chapter of APAP and the Center for Asian American Media are co-presenting a local program which includes the national broadcast, a film screening of “Vincent Who?” and a local conversation on hate crimes & bullying. This conversation will be moderated by R.J. Lozada from APEX Express, a local radio show from an Asian American perspective. The program will follow with a Q&A and will be broadcast on radio and recorded. SALDEF is working with the organizers of the events in Los Angeles and Washington, DC, and encourages Sikhs across the country to attend a hearing in their town and make sure to present the voice of the Sikh American community.
