Sikh Student Soars with SikhLEAD Internship

Sikh Student Soars with SikhLEAD Internship

[Washington, DC] – For 15-year-old Trinjan Kaur, last summer wasn’t just filled with sunshine and lazy days. Instead she embarked on a transformative journey that ignited her passion for law and deepened her connection to her Sikh faith, all thanks to the SikhLEAD Regional Internship program.

“[SikhLEAD] easily became the highlight of my summer,” reflects Trinjan Kaur. “They taught me professional skills rarely any other 15-year-old has. I learned how to network, build relationships, and maintain the right mindset for professional success.”

This newfound polish wasn’t just theoretical. Through SikhLEAD’s extensive network, Trinjan landed an internship at an environmental law firm – no easy feat for a high school sophomore. “[SikhLEAD] opened doors I never thought possible,” she exclaims.

But the program’s impact transcended mere professional advancement. For Trinjan, who grew up in a predominantly white area, SikhLEAD fostered a sense of belonging she had never truly experienced.

“Meeting other Sikh youth with similar values filled me with immense pride and comfort in my faith,” she shares. “The SikhLEAD community provided a support system I didn’t even know I needed.”

Weekly seminars with Sikh American changemakers and professionals offered invaluable guidance and inspiration. “[They] talked about their journeys, challenges, and successes, giving me practical advice and a roadmap for my own future,” Trinjan Kaur remarked .

Today, with newfound confidence and a clear vision, Trinjan knows exactly which field of law she wants to conquer. But more importantly, she carries the unwavering support of the SikhLEAD community, ready to propel her every step of the way.

Glorious Balance, Ameet Gill

Celebrate Vaisakhi with a Stunning Sikh Art Collaboration!

This Vaisakhi, SALDEF is delighted to unveil a unique art collaboration featuring renowned Community Artist, Ameet Gill. In an exclusive interview, we delve into the inspiration and story behind this must-see Vaisakhi art piece.

Ameet’s art commemorates 13 years of the SikhLEAD Internship Program during Vaisakhi. Ameet is a Canadian artist with Indian origins; “my paintings are symbolic and are deeper life reflections using imagery from daily life.” She has received many awards and distinctions, and her paintings have a rich earthen sensibility.

Q. What inspiration did you draw from for these pieces in particular?

A: Vaisakhi commemorates the beginning of spring harvest and uniformed baptized army of Khalsa created by Guru Gobind Singh.  The title of Khalsa refers to people whose life and spirit are solely the property of the One Creator and their embodiment of equality on the path to protect, fight and serve all mankind.

Q. Were there any connections you wanted to convey between Vaisakhi/Sikhi and SikhLEAD when you were creating these pieces?

A: Birds are a Symbol of flight and its balance just like the accomplishments of the Alumni, who are making a mark by following the core values and being the agents of change. The golden harvest of rejuvenation and empowerment embraces the path that SikhLEAD and SALDEF is paving for the young Sikh Americans.

Q. Which mediums did you use, and why?

A: My materials of choice and style were intentional and deliberate. Representing rootedness, tradition and brilliance through miniature style, wood, gold, bright acrylic and oil colors. The continuation of traditional techniques in a contemporary manner amplified the embracing of core values to pave a brighter newer future.

Q. Are there any particular feelings or emotions you wanted to evoke from people when they saw the art?

A:  I hope when people see these pieces they can feast their eyes, pause and contemplate through colors, geometric dance and its balance, a circle representing “One light,”  golden glow with harvest and its specks highlighting the flight and embodiment of such a bright harvest.

Q. What about SALDEF as an organization in particular interested you in taking on this project and collaborating with us to celebrate 13 years of SikhLEAD?

A. SALDEF offers a platform for young Sikh Americans to not only rise to the forefront of change but also lead it to fruition. I am honored to be a part of this endeavor and to have been inspired into creating this mini series of my new works.

SALDEF Drives Bill Momentum with Four New Congressional Co-Sponsors to the Transnational Repression Policy Act

In the wake of recent transnational repression incidents targeting a Sikh American citizen in New York City, SALDEF has been heavily engaging with our Congressional and federal government allies to educate our nation’s leaders.

Amidst rising concerns about transnational repression, SALDEF has secured four new co-sponsors for the Transnational Repression Policy Act this January: Representative Goldman (NY-10), Representative Krishnamoorthi (IL-8), Representative Jayapal (WA-7), Representative Lee (CA-12). This critical bill, championed by SALDEF, offers targeted resources, protections, and government accountability to safeguard vulnerable communities.

By presenting compelling evidence and nuanced analyses of these transnational repression incidents, SALDEF is ensuring that Congress understands the immediate concerns of the Sikh community and also the broader implications for American democracy.

Here are some ways you can join the fight:

  • Contact the Biden Administration: Urge them to prioritize addressing transnational repression and its impact on Sikh Americans and all American communities.
  • Follow and share SALDEF’s social media content: Stay informed and amplify SALDEF’s message to raise awareness.
  • Donate to SALDEF: Your support fuels our critical work in protecting the rights and safety of Sikh Americans.

Sikh Americans have faced specific instances of transnational repression, including threats, harassment, and even attempted violence.  SALDEF works to expose these threats, advocate for justice, and ensure the safety and security of the Sikh American community. By advocating for policies and legislation that counter transnational repression, SALDEF seeks to create a safe environment for Sikh Americans to live and thrive.

The fight against transnational repression is ongoing, but SALDEF’s unwavering commitment is making a difference. By shining a light on this injustice and urging swift action, SALDEF is ensuring that Sikh Americans can live and thrive in America without fear, free from the shadows of foreign intimidation.

SALDEF Welcomes FBI’s Release of Punjabi PSA on Transnational Repression

Building on SALDEF advocacy, the release is an acknowledgement of community concerns

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) welcomes the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for releasing a public service announcement (PSA) in Punjabi, addressing transnational repression.

By releasing this announcement in Punjabi, the FBI is validating the ongoing and very real threat of transnational repression against Sikhs in America, ” said SALDEF Acting Executive Director, Kavneet Singh. “This release builds on months of discussions with the Administration on how to effectively ensure the safety of the community in light of deep concerns shared with us by the sangat and other minority communities. Issuing it in Punjabi means that this information will reach the most members of our community as possible. This public service announcement underscores how seriously the government is taking our concerns around the safety, security, and sovereignty of America and its residents.”

The PSA highlights various forms of transnational repression such as surveillance, stalking, harassment, and cyberattacks. It underscores the FBI’s commitment to protecting individuals in the United States from foreign threats and ensures that reports of repression are taken seriously, without the fear of information being shared with foreign governments.

This critical development is a direct result of SALDEF’s continuous advocacy and engagement with the FBI, Congress, and the Administration to protect the rights and freedoms of the Sikh American community.

With detailed research reports in the past and a forthcoming report on transnational repression, SALDEF continues to lead the charge engaging with national leaders regarding the safety and advancement of Sikh American civil rights.

SALDEF urges community members and the press to listen to and share the PSA, and to report any instances of transnational repression. The PSA is a crucial tool in our collective efforts to combat intimidation and threats from foreign entities.

Please see the PSA’s transcription below, and you can listen to the full audio here.

Like many Sikh Americans, Tej Dhingra knows how it feels to not have his background fully understood. He was born and raised in Texas, where Sikhs make up only .05% of the state population. After noticing a lack of alternatives for turbans when it came to athletic sportswear, Tej decided to create his own solution.

Currently a sophomore at Bowdoin College, Tej is the founder of TAJ, which creates lightweight, breathable turbans designed for physical activity. Over the summer, Tej was accepted into the SALDEF Innovation Fellows program, where he was able to continue building TAJ with the support of a large Sikh network.

The Innovation Fellows program provides the opportunity for aspiring Sikh American entrepreneurs to develop professionally through the exposure and evaluation of breakthrough technologies emerging out of federal laboratories and academic research centers. Fellows were given the opportunity to pitch their startups at the 2022 SikhLEAD Innovation Startup Competition.

TAJ, which means “crown” in Punjabi, was selected as the winner of this competition.

Turbans are a significant article of the Sikh faith. It represents equality, self-respect, and commitment to their religion: most visibly, long and uncut hair which observant Sikh men and some women wrap in a turban. Although he does not personally wear a turban, Tej has heard his Sikh peers and family members complain about the overheating and excessive sweating that turbans cause while exercising.

“Sports meant everything to me as a child and it still occupies a huge role in my life,” said Tej, who grew up playing competitive tennis year-round. “The court is a safe space that gives me peace, confidence, and the ability to express myself in a unique way. So, the motivation behind TAJ was pretty simple. I wanted to create a product that allowed Sikh athletes to feel confident in their hair, and that didn’t force them to sacrifice comfort for their religious expression.”

Tej leveraged the Innovation Fellows Program to bring his idea to fruition. A major draw of the program for him was the mentorship that participants received.

“The most valuable piece of advice I received was that before jumping to develop a solution or product, you need to first become obsessed with the problem itself, and analyze it from all angles.”

Tej acted on this advice by conducting ‘customer insight interviews’ with dozens of Sikh athletes, college students, hair scientists, designers, and leaders in the smart-fabric industry.

“Each conversation I had not only gave me a deeper insight into the emotional significance that turbans hold but also challenged assumptions I had previously held regarding the major pain points for Sikhs. This allowed me to tweak my strategy as I transitioned into prototype development.”

The new and improved rendition of the product features a 100% polyester base and an elastic, spandex-like band to ensure a snug fit for the wearer. In his pitch, Tej also discussed incorporating anti-microbial elements such as copper to combat the bacteria that typically build up underneath the turban cloth.

Now, as an aspiring business leader, Tej hopes to continue channeling his passion for both sports and entrepreneurship to empower the Sikh community.

“The sports industry fascinates me, and I think there is definitely a rising demand for innovation centered around increasing diversity in sports. That is why I’m so excited to continue working on TAJ and hopefully raise awareness towards the Sikh American community in the process.”
