This past Tuesday, November 26th, SALDEF held another Law Enforcement Partnership Program training— this time with the Mercer County Police Academy in New Jersey. SALDEF trained 64 officers over the course of the day. The Sikh awareness training covered Sikhism, Sikh Culture, best practices when entering a Gurdwara and more.
The training was conducted by SALDEF Board Member Amman Singh Seehra and he said, “I am always happy to come to Mercer County Police Academy to conduct LEPP trainings, the recruits are always engaging and receptive to new information. This years recruits were eager to learn and also understood that now more than ever it is important for law enforcement to build community and develop relationships across all cultures.”
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, Mercer County Chiefs of Police Association, Mercer County government and Mercer County Community College, initiated the concept of the academy, which trains officers for the entire state of New Jersey and has been a long-time partner with SALDEF. The LEPP training is critical in building understanding and relationships between the local Sangats and their local law enforcement. Over the years we have seen examples of how these relationships not only build respect and understanding but also provide opportunity and growth within the community. If you would like to have SALDEF do a training at your local police or if you would like to become a certified LEPP trainer please contact us at info@saldef.org. As always, we’re on the frontlines. We are making sure that our community’s concerns and needs are being addressed.
