Sikh Americans historically have been underrepresented in government and the political arena in the United States. The SikhLEAD Program works to change this by developing the next generation of Sikh American leaders. It creates a robust pipeline of aspiring Sikh American leaders with critical experience working in the government.
SALDEF is honored to congratulate our former SikhLEAD Alumni, Harmann Singh, on his selection as Supreme Court Judicial Law Clerk. Harmann will be the first Sikh American to ever hold this position.
He will be clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In his reflection, he credits the SikhLEAD program for accelerating his professional career and investing in his potential through his formative years.
“I am grateful for the crucial role SALDEF played in sparking my interest in the law, including during my LDP year, when I met a cohort of engaging, inspiring, and brilliant young Sikhs.”
Prior to law school, Harmann worked as a Government and Policy Fellow at SALDEF on issues including airport profiling, employment discrimination, and voting rights. He graduated from Harvard Law School and from Columbia University as a Truman Scholar, and previously worked at the White House as part of our Leadership Development Program.
Since its founding in 2010, the SikhLEAD Leadership Development Program has a proven track record of inspiring, training, and supporting a diverse, motivated, and entrepreneurial group of young Sikh leaders for a lifetime of community engagement and public leadership.
Youth leadership development is core to SALDEF’s mission and we are proud to be able to advance the next generation of changemakers like Harmann Singh. To support future Sikh representation in the halls of power, please click here to make a tax-deductible donation.
