Advocacy and Policy Fellow
A successful candidate will have an interest and experience in working with and in the Sikh American or diverse communities. The candidate should have substantial research and writing experience. The candidate should be self-motivated and capable of working independently.
The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) offers a year-long paid advocacy and policy fellowship to young persons who have completed their undergraduate degree and are interested in working on policy, research, and advocacy for the Sikh American community at the national level. The Fellow will primarily work with the policy team and other national staff on key legislative issues and design and implement other SALDEF programs.
Past Fellows and interns have prepared Congressional testimony, submitted letters to federal agencies, organized community education programs, facilitated advocacy and community power-building campaigns, and conducted original research.
The Fellow will work with the policy, program development, and communications departments as part of holistic project teams at SALDEF.
On the policy team, the Fellow will, among other things:
- Staff and monitor key legislative initiatives and issues relevant to the Sikh American, AMEMSA, and AANHPI community
- Conduct research and study topics assigned
- Prepare memoranda, letters, statements, and other public messaging
- Prepare briefing materials for the Executive Director and policy team
- Maintain relationships with Congress, the Executive, and other key agencies and partners
- Represent SALDEF on various coalition committees and interact with other national AANHPI and civil rights organizations
- Supervise undergraduate interns and research assistants
- Collaborate with and organize webinars with the communications team to advance policy initiatives
A successful candidate will:
- Have completed an undergraduate degree or graduate degree
- Submit a resume, three references, and a writing sample
- Be interested in exploring new areas of emerging policy
- Have an interest in policy, advocacy, community organizing, or power-building within diverse communities
- Demonstrate superior research and writing experience
- Be self-motivated and capable of working independently
The position will be remote for the foreseeable future. SALDEF is based in Washington, DC.

SALDEF Program Associate
The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) is seeking a Program Associate who has completed their undergraduate degree and is interested in working on programs that benefit the Sikh community on a national level. The Program associate will report to SALDEF’s program director and implement SALDEF’s programs such as SikhLEAD and other programs.
A successful candidate will have an interest and experience in working with the Sikh American or diverse communities. The candidate should have some experience in designing and implementing programs. The candidate should be self-motivated, willing to work with others and have the ability to reach out to various community members and partners where needed.
The Program Associate will work with others in the program department, policy and communications departments as part of holistic project teams at SALDEF.
On the program development team, the Program Associate among other things will:
- Supervise the SikhLEAD Internship Program application process, conduct applicant interviews, and assist the Program Director in selecting SikhLEAD candidates, mentors and other volunteers as needed
- Under the supervision of the Program Director, serve as a regional lead and project lead for the SikhLEAD internship program and help to place the students in various internships
- Collaborate with the Program Director and other partners to coordinate programming, workshops, and trainings for SikhLEADers
- Assist in the process of designing community outreach events
- Assist in the delivery of the programs and must be capable in utilizing various virtual technology tools to implement programs
- Own the administrative process of the programs
The role of a Program Associate is a full-time position and this job requires flexibility of working hours as often meetings also occur outside of the 8-5pm time frame and sometimes on weekends.
