According to recent reports, President Obama may cancel his visit to Harmandir Sahib on his trip to India. Popularly referred to as the Golden Temple, Harmandir Sahib is an important center of the Sikh faith. His advisors are reportedly concerned that pictures of him covering his head (a sign of respect in the East) will be used to portray him negatively in the American media. We call upon President Obama to rise above the politics of fear and stand up for the American principles of equality, diversity, and freedom of religion. Take Action

We call on President Obama to remember what he said in 2008: “
So long as our relationship is defined by our differences, we will empower those who sow hatred rather than peace, those who promote conflict rather than the cooperation that can help all of our people achieve justice and prosperity. And this cycle of suspicion and discord must end. Of course, recognizing our common humanity is only the beginning of our task. Words alone cannot meet the needs of our people. These needs will be met only if we act boldly in the years ahead; and if we understand that the challenges we face are shared, and our failure to meet them will hurt us all.” Tell President Obama to, in his words, “act boldly” and not succumb to the xenophobic trend promoted by some in this country. Tell President Obama to stand up against the anti-Islamic and xenophobic trend that has taken over American public discourse. Tell President Obama to stand up against those who want to use race and religion to divide our nation. Tell President Obama to visit the Harmandir Sahib and send a message that America embraces diversity and will not compromise its principles. Take Action
