In April 2013, Members of Congress came together to form the bipartisan American Sikh Congressional Caucus. The Caucus will educate Members of Congress and the general public about Sikh issues and support the Sikh American community. It will also allow Members of Congress to strategize on how to support and protect the rights of the Sikh American community. Representative Judy Chu (D-CA) and Representative David Valadao (R-CA) are co-Chairs of the Caucus, which is currently made up of thirty members who represent both parties from all corners of the country, from Virginia to California, and from Arizona to New Jersey. The Sikh Human Development Foundation (SHDF) is dedicated to transforming lives through higher education by providing scholarships to bright but poor students in Punjab and neighboring states for higher professional education in a large variety of disciplines. The cost of higher education in India has made it largely inaccessible for most families, and this situation limits job opportunities and financial stability. SHDF identified this problem over a decade ago and has been providing scholarships to over 800 talented students from low income families.
