Happy Vaisakhi

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh,

Today Sikhs around the world celebrate Vaisakhi, the day when Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa Panth. The Khalsa was created during a time when the region was in turmoil. Guru Gobind Singh was looking to create a  community that would stand up for those in need, uphold justice and equity, and devote their lives to service, all while recognizing the human race as one. This year’s Vaisakhi celebrations will be different from any we have had previously, as we are in the midst of a global pandemic. Social distancing recommendations affect the way we gather to worship and how we are able to interact with our Sangat. The gurus taught us about community and connection, and now more than ever we can see just how connected we all truly are. As we have seen in times of crisis, Sikhs all over the world have stepped up to help, including providing critical life-saving care, ensuring our at-risk neighbors have groceries, meals and supplies, and by making and supplying protective equipment for those on the front lines.

As we celebrate Vaisakhi this year many of us may ask, how can we live out our Sikh values and take care of one another without being physically together.  As counterintuitive as it may seem, social distancing to protect others from getting sick is a critical way we can support and take care of each other. Please consider this as you celebrate and make sure you are considering the safety of all. Many gurdwaras are offering virtual diwans and technology allows us to connect without putting anyone at risk. The current situation is no way ideal but as Sikhs, we understand that our individual comforts do not outweigh actions that would benefit all.

The entire SALDEF staff and board wish everyone a Happy Vaisakhi. May you and your families live in Chardi Kala and let us continue our Ardaas for sarbat da bhala!
