Sikh Americans Build Community in Sacramento

More than 80 attendees participated in the first-ever Langar on the Hill at California’s State Capitol in Sacramento today. The event was designed to build community while celebrating Sikh Americans’ 100-plus-year presence in the Go lden State. This langar was organized by participants of SALDEF’s SikhLEAD Internship and Leadership Development Program. “It was so great to see community members, legislative staffers and elected officials from all backgrounds come together,” said SikhLEAD alum Henna Kaur, a recent UC Berkeley graduate. “Sikh Americans have a long and rich legacy in California, and Langar on the Hill provided an opportunity for us to share our traditions with our fellow Californians.”sacramento-langar-saldef-sikhlead-banner-2016 Lawmakers, Capitol staff, tourists, and Sacramento residents sat side-by-side as equals on September 29 to enjoy a meal, regardless of differing religions or backgrounds. Langar is a 500-year-old Sikh religious tradition and represents the religion’s values of equality and service.
