It will also prevent states from discriminating against minorities by making all voting and district changes transparent and seeking federal approval for these changes. Voting is a fundamental right of all Sikh Americans. It allows each Sikh American a voice in the government, particularly as Sikhs seek to change discriminatory policies. SALDEF will continue to lobby for the VRA Amendment challenging discriminatory practices on behalf of all Sikh Americans. To learn more about VRA please click here. Raising Awareness at an Orlando Magic Basketball Game SALDEF was invited to participate in South Asia Night at an Orlando Magic basketball game on January 19, 2014.  During the pre-game, SALDEF along with local area Sikh Americans helped to raise awareness by distributing Sikh American Information Cards and conducting a turban tying demonstration. Dozens of attendees had turbans tied and several kept their turbans on during the actual game.  The event was organized as part of a broader event to celebrate South Asian culture.  SALDEF is thankful to Dr. BP Sodhi and the local Sikh American community for organizing the event. SALDEF Continues TSA Trainings On January 23rd, SALDEF Northeast Regional Director, Jaswant Chani, conducted a Sikh awareness training—one of a series of ongoing Sikh awareness trainings—for 25 members of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in Chelsea, MA.  The three-and-a-half hour training provided information on the Sikh faith and theology, as well as the challenges facing Sikh Americans. The presentation included the viewing of SALDEF’s training video On Common Ground. This is a continuation of the partnership that SALDEF has had with TSA to train officers across the Northeast under SALDEF’s Law Enforcement Partnership Program.
