Remembering Oak Creek – How Will You Commemorate the One-Year Anniversary?

The one-year anniversary of the tragic shooting in Oak Creek, WI is fast approaching on August 5th.  SALDEF recommends using this time to organize activities which encourage reflection and unity.  Below are suggestions which are intended to bring communities together and raise awareness about Sikhs.
Participate in the Oak Creek 6K Memorial Run & Walk

The Oak Creek Sangat has organized a 6K Memorial Run & Walk in Oak Creek on August 3rd.  Register , get more information via Facebook, or contact the organizers via email at chardikala6k@gmail.com.

Organize Your Own Run

The Surat Initiative is organizing a National Run in Solidarity Against Violence on August 5th.  If you are interested in organizing a run in your area, visit the Surat Initiative.

Organize a Vigil

Commemorate the anniversary by organizing a vigil in your community remembering the victims of all hate crimes. SALDEF has created a toolkit to assist with this type of program.

Bring 6 Non- Sikh Friends to your Gurdwara

Hold an “Open House” at your Gurdwara to encourage non-Sikhs to visit and learn about Sikhism.  Use the SALDEF guide “Organizing an Open House at the Gurdwara Sahib” as a guide.
