Governor Murphy and Senator Menendez invite SALDEF to attend an Interfaith Roundtable Addressing Hate

Trenton NJ – On Friday, December 13th 2019, SALDEF was invited to attend an Interfaith Roundtable hosted by Governor Murphy and Senator Bob Menendez. The round table was held in response to the recent attack at a New Jersey Jewish Deli were six people were killed. The attack which targeted the Jewish community has been designated as domestic terrorism. The purpose of the roundtable was to discuss how faith leaders can come together and help prevent incidents such as this recent shooting from occurring again. WATCH: Interfaith Roundtable hosted by Governor Murphy and  Senator Bob Menendez The roundtable focused on creating interfaith dialogue outside of a tragedy in hopes of building an interfaith front against hate. It focused on three main ideas: Know your neighbor get to know ALL the people in your neighborhood regardless of religion.
Support your neighbor help those in your community
Protect your neighbor if you see or hear someone that could be a danger, inform the community. Executive Director Kiran Kaur Gill who attended the meeting said, “When incidents of hate have occurred against the Sikh community we have seen an outpouring of support from other faith leaders and it has meant a lot to the community The Sikh community is here today to extend our love and support to the Jewish community and all communities targeted by hate. These types of attacks cannot be tolerated.” The roundtable brought together New Jersey State Leaders including, AG Gurbir S. Grewal, Lt. Gov Sheila Oliver, and Jersey City Mayor Steven Felup. SALDEF will continue to build relationships with all faith communities to develop a better understanding of each other and build lasting relationships. We will also continue our work with the Department of Homeland Securities HSAC division to support the prevention of violence against faith based communities.
