Two speakers addressed the Sangat including FBI Special Agent Daud Andish and civil rights attorney Madihha Ahussain. The speakers highlighted the need to document and report any hate crimes or incidents of bias against themselves, their property, or the Gurdwara. Additionally, they addressed one’s rights when interacting with law enforcement and immigration-related concerns.

“The forum, was a great opportunity for the local Sikh American community to introduce themselves to and build relationships with federal and local agencies and groups that can address complaints, incidents, or issues they may have,” said SALDEF Community Relations Manager Satnam Singh. Following the resolution of the government shutdown, we now look forward to inviting additional representatives to address the congregation and hear about specific needs of their local Sikh American community in the coming months.

We would like to thank SALDEF Regional Volunteer Satinder Singh Malhi for helping to organize the event as well as serving as the translator for the day, the Gurdwara’s management, particularly Karanbir Singh and Parminder Singh, and the Sangat of the Sikh Center of the San Francisco Bay Area for their partnership in holding this highly successful event.

SALDEF is committed to empowering the Sikh American community nationwide about their rights and how to exercise them without fear or hesitation.
