Sikh drivers are transforming US trucking. Take a ride along the Punjabi American highway
As truck drivers age toward retirement and the shortage grows, Sikh immigrants and their kids are increasingly taking up the job. Sikhs are dominating the industry of trucking schools, truck companies, truck washes, trucker stops. Additionally, at the Sikh temples in Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield and Riverside, the majority of worshippers are truck drivers and their families.

Short movie on eminent Sikh American bags award in United States
A short film based on the real life of Gurinder Singh Khalsa titled ‘SINGH’ has won Short of the year award at the Covellite International Film Festival in Montana. “‘SINGH’ tells the story that occurred in May 2007 when Gurinder Singh Khalsa (a Sikh man who wears a turban) was not allowed to board an airline without the removal of his turban to be further inspected by TSA agents.” The film has also been chosen an official selection for the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, the largest film fest in the midwest.

Relatives of Ohio family slain speak out after arrest
Police in Branford, Connecticut have arrested Gurpreet Singh for the murder of the four Sikh victims were fatally shot April 28 in an apartment home. Those killed were Singh’s wife, Shalinderjit Kaur; Singh’s sister-in-law, Amarjit Kaur; and Singh’s in-laws, Parmjit Kaur and Hakiakat Singh Pannag. 

N.J.-Pa. Sikh veterans march in national Independence Day parade to combat discrimination
The Sikh-American Veterans Alliance sent Sikh veterans to march in Washington D.C. Independence Day Parade. Lt. Col. Kamal S. Kalsi, a Sikh veteran and physician from N.J. who co-founded SAVA, said that as hate crimes have risen nationally their participation in the parade has taken on a new meaning. Kalsi included that SAVA wants “‘to maintain a positive message, that diversity is a core American value.”’

Indian American Filmmaker Harpreet Kaur Wins Emmy Award for Show Putting ‘Human Face on Farmers’
Harpreet Kaur is a Sikh filmmaker who recently won an Emmy Award for a segment she produced in Season 6 of the TV show “Maryland Farm and Harvest.” Kaur is a producer at Maryland Public Television and the founder of Sach Productions. A press release described Harpeet’s stories as ones that “convey a strong sense of the people and places she covers.”
