SALDEF Holds a Know Your Rights Forum in Canton, Michigan

SALDEF held a Know Your Rights forum at the Gobind Marg Gurdwara on June 30, in Canton, Michigan. The event was attended by 120 members of the Gurudwara’s Sangat. Charles Schoder from the Michigan Civil Rights Department and SALDEF Community Organizer Satnam Singh spoke at the forum.

During the forum, Mr. Schoder spoke about how the commission works on discrimination cases with other local, state and federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Singh covered the roles of the Transportation Security Administration, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s policies while traveling, and the FBI’s Hate-Crime policies.

Know Your Rights Forums introduces the local Sikh Sangat to the resources provided to them by different government agencies and also teaches the agencies about the local Sikh community. The main goal of these forums is to build relationships and teach sangats across the nation about opportunities and resources that are available to them.
