SALDEF Media Training Empowers California Sikhs!

SALDEF is proud to announce the expansion of its media initiative— now including a roster of Sikh Americans who received media training and are all based in Southern California. This inaugural SoCal Media Training class had the opportunity to train in NBC4’s recently renovated and state-of-the-art studios in Universal City, California.

Each trainee received instruction from Auburn Seminary, a media training program that has trained over 3,000 religious leaders across the United States, as well as presentations from SALDEF staffers on its Turban Myths reports done in conjunction with Stanford University, and how to use SALDEF’s Media Initiative to combat anti-turban and anti-beard bias across the country.

This group of SoCal Sikh Americans joins 15 previously trained Sikh Americans—like Darsh Preet Singh, the first dastaar-wearing NCAA basketball player—in supporting their community by serving as a voice to the media, both proactively and during times of rapid response.

If you are a Sikh American based in the Bay Area, we’re coming to you next! If you have an interest in media and want to serve your community, apply by October 1, 2014.

Don’t live in the Bay Area but want to do a media training? Contact SALDEF Media. Camera shy, but want to ensure that Sikh American communities across the United States show their neighbors the Sikh American way of life? Support our Media Initiative TODAY!

A special thank you to all of our participants, trainers, sponsors, and volunteers.
