Dear Sangat Ji, As I left Oak Creek with a heavy heart this afternoon, I reflected on the intensity of the events of the past 10 days. We have witnessed the single greatest tragedy in our Sikh American history, one which briefly put our community in the media spotlight and left us seeing how much work we have ahead of us. This past Sunday, the Oak Creek Sangat held their first Gurdwara service since the attack. With an estimated 3500 in attendance, the Sangat raised the Nishaan Sahib once again, opened their doors in all directions, and reflected the Sikh spirit of Chardhi-Kala (high spirits), as gracefully as they always have. It was an emotional time for the community, and one which helped put this monumental event into perspective. The Oak Creek Sangat, however, was not alone in their remembrance of the Sikhs who lost their lives. Hundreds of congregations participated in the National Moment of Reflection which took place in churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and gurdwaras around the country. National organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, Baptist Joint Committee and countless others helped ensure that communities across America stood with us in solidarity. After Sunday’s program, I attended a peace rally in downtown Milwaukee, where I was joined by the Executive Director of the largest Muslim American organization in the country as well an interfaith coalition of prominent leaders who shared their sympathies with our community. The most memorable speaker was a former Neo-Nazi leader who had turned civil rights activist. With tears flowing, he expressed his personal sadness about the events and articulated the need for all of us to stand united against hate and terrorism, whatever shape they may take. As I return to Washington, DC and begin to contemplate the work ahead, my thoughts and prayers remain with the wounded and grieving. To the local community, I express our deepest condolences as well as our commitment to stay engaged long-term with your Sangat. I know that I am not alone in offering this support; we are all members of your Oak Creek Sangat now. Guru Fateh,
Jasjit Singh SALDEF Executive Director
