7 Significant Media Moments for Sikhs in 2015…Including a Major Announcement! 
This year SALDEF’s Media Initiative and its network generated a record number of media opportunities for Sikh Americans, in order to raise our community’s profile and introduce our neighbors to Sikhs and our values. Here are seven of those major moments: 7. Mandeep Singh, a SikhLEAD graduate, demonstrated what leadership looks like in Bloomberg News. And he held a video conversation with The New York Times about why first generation students are organizing. (Mandeep’s observations start at 5.21). 6. SALDEF Board Member Jasbir Kaur Bawa tells America why Starbucks’ Race Together Campaign is Not the Answer in Talking Points Memo. Since this op-ed was published, Starbucks’ program was mostly discontinued. 5. Jasjit Singh, SALDEF’s Executive Director, speaks on the new FBI Training Manual and procedures for hate crimes tracking in Newsweek: FBI To Track Hate Crimes Against Hindus, Sikhs, Arab Americans. 4. The community of Oak Creek gurdwara and the practice of langar was highlighted in a film by 2015 Peabody Prize winning director Grace Lee in the nationally-touring film Off the Menu. 3. NBC News reports on Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal being the first Sikh to serve with his articles of faith in Harris County, Texas: Sikhs Who Serve: Texas County Sheriff’s Office Makes History. 2. Fifty million Americans tuned in to watch the historic Sikh American Float in this year’s Rose Parade. ABC News told them about Sikhs’ “core beliefs in One God and equality among all” and how the dastaar “is a symbol for equality.” WATCH. 1.
