MA Governor Charlie Baker, Congressman James P. McGovern Join Grand Opening of Westborough Gurdwara

SALDEF would like to congratulate the Sangat of Massachusetts for the grand opening of the Westborough Gurdwara this past weekend. SALDEF was honored to have been invited and helped bring Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and U.S. Representative James P. McGovern (D-Worcester) to the Grand Opening. The Westborough Gurdwara is the first Sikh Gurdwara in central Massachusetts.

Baker. “[The state] appreciates your culture, your faith, and your belief in one another.” “It was a pleasure to host Gov. Baker and we are incredibly thankful that he took out the time to meet with the local Sikh American community,” said SALDEF’s Director of Government and Community Relations, Satnam Singh, who played an integral role in bringing the Governor to the grand opening. “This was an excellent opportunity for local Sikh American residents to meet with and gain the support of their elected representatives while celebrating the grand opening of their Gurdwara.”

This event is another part of SALDEF’s continued contribution to the Boston Area Sikh American community, including continuing to train local and federal law enforcement officers across the region and holding the first-ever Gurdwara safety workshop last year.

Additionally, earlier this year, we organized a Know Your Rights Forum at the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat Boston. These forums help local Sikh American communities better understand their civil rights, identify local agencies that provide aid, and form relationships with their local law enforcement and government agencies. To request a Know Your Rights Forum in your city or at your local Gurdwara, please complete this form or contact know-your-rights@saldef.org. Finally, SALDEF will be hosting an Anti-Bullying Workshop to be held at the Gurdwara Boston Sikh Sangat in Everett, MA on Sunday, October 29, 2017 1-2pm. Participants will include the Massachusetts Commission Against Bullying, U.S. Attorney’s Office and SALDEF Vice Chair Navjeet Singh.
